Urban Society in an Age of War: Nordlingen, 1580-1720 (Princeton:
Princeton University Press, 1979), 350 pp.
This book is a study of the social structure of a small German town during
the seventeenth century. It shows how the society of the town was
transformed by the impact of the Thirty Years War and other wars of the
seventeenth century. The book is a revision of my doctoral dissertation.
It is based on research I carried out in the Nordlingen city archive in
1970-71 and 1974.
This book won the Wallace K. Ferguson Prize of the Canadian Historical
Association in 1982.
